Rainger FX Deep Space Pulsar: An eccentric new pumping effects pedal
Deep pulsations that mutate your guitar
The new Rainger FX Deep Space Pulsar mini-pedal is an effect that will have your guitar sound pulsing in time to a beat. This eccentric UK-made box is the latest in an intriguing set of effects pedals from David Rainger.
Deep Pulsations
The effect is similar to the one achieved in a studio by ducking the signal via side-chaining. Normally awkward to achieve in a live scenario, it seems that they have managed to achieve it in the form of this mini pedal. Ideally, you’ll want something to trigger the Rainger FX Deep Space Pulsar, such as the included pressure-sensitive foot switch or a microphone placed, say, in front of the kick drum on your drummer’s kit. The overall idea is to let you make your guitar’s sound throb in time with a pulse.
The result is some interesting throbbing tones that pulse in time to a rhythmic phrase or the tap of your foot on that pedal. The effect can also be made to give you a ‘reversed’ guitar sound. The Igor mini pedal is included to allow you to ‘tap’ in the pulse, so you can even use it without a drummer.
Trigger
Timing can be corrected so that the Tap Tempo stays in time. You can even use CV (Control Voltage) as a trigger. So there are plenty of options for getting that pulse spot on using input from a live drummer, your foot tapping or a sequencer or drum machine with CV outputs.
There is a great audio demo over on the Rainger FX website that gives some good examples of what you can achieve with the Deep Space Pulsar. Go check them out! I’ve also added a little video below which previews a few of the company’s pedals from this year’s NAMM Show and includes a bit on the Deep Space Pulsar.
