1010music wants to take us back to a time when sampling was fun and easy. But hopefully not to all that mucking about with zip drives, 4MB of RAM and 2-line LCDs. And so we have tangerine, the latest miniature marvel in the nanobox range of fruity music-making boxes.
Tangerine is a sampler. It can handle 24 voices with 16 layers of velocity, streaming up to 576 simultaneous samples directly from a microSD card. You can play it over MIDI, you can play it on the touch screen with a grid of 8 pads, or you can sequence it internally in real or quantised time. It comes with 4GB of hits, loops and multi-sample instruments. It includes a 1.7GB piano from a top-notch library, which sounds amazing through the inbuilt reverb and delay.
To sample into tangerine, simply plug something in and hit record. It has a multi-sample wizard for automatic sampling and mapping and an automatic sample slicer to take the pain out of editing. And it’s all in regular wave files, so it works with everything.
Like the rest of the nanobox range, it’s easy to use even for a small box and sounds fantastic. And don’t forget it comes with a colour-matched USB cable. It also has MIDI in and out and an analog clock input for syncing up the sequencer. Sampling should be easy and tangerine looks like it’s doing all the hard work for us.
Tangerine will be available in November for $399.
