When you think of portable, self-powered PA systems, JBL is likely to be one of the names that springs to mind. With a company history of nearly 80 years, JBL is a big brand to have attached to your PA system. Of course, PA technology has advanced greatly in the last few decades. For musicians on the move, portable, line array, column PAs have become highly popular.
Enter the JBL IRX ONE: JBL’s most affordable and most compact column pa system. The IRX ONE is so compact and portable, that the entire system packs away into one unit which can be carried by one hand. There are some nice pieces of industrial design here; the entire column packs away into the base unit. Additionally, the handle doubles up as a tablet stand; these are thoughtful design touches.

3-Channel Mixer with Bluetooth
Undoubtedly, typical users of all-in-one systems like this, buy them for portability and convenience. For example: solo performers, buskers, presenters and singer/songwriters. As you’d expect, the IX ONE incorporates a built-in mixer and enough connectivity for most situations.
You’ll find a 3-channel mixer on board with 1/4″ and XLR inputs (with phantom power), and a simple two-band EQ per channel. Additionally, there are effects gleaned from Harman group sister companies, You’ll find dbx automatic feedback suppression, Soundcraft audio ducking (great for those spin classes!) plus 5 EQ presets and Bluetooth.
Line Array for Consistent Sound
One of the big selling points of line-array systems such as this, is that you’ll enjoy a wide, consistent sound from a single sound source. In other words, your audio should sound the same, regardless of where people are sitting or standing. You’ll find an 8″ woofer coupled to six, two-inch speakers in the column itself.
JBL is claiming 118db max SPL with 40Hz-20kHz frequency response. I can’t tell you how powerful this system is, as for some reason JBL has decided to quote meaningless peak power figures rather than RMS figures. Put it this way – for its intended purpose, I expect it to be adequately loud and to sound rich and full.
At this price point, there’s little else that offers such a neat, integrated, all-in-one solution. JBL could be onto a winner, here…

Quoting max SPL without quoting the distortion figures at that level is another way consumer information from the so-called ‘specs’ has been degraded and dumbed down (and let’s be honest, disguised) to the point of being useless.
