Aberrant DSP Lofi Oddity: A box full of lo-fi toys
If you’re a sucker for tasty lo-fi sounds, you’re going to love this new freebie from Aberrant DSP! Lofi Oddity pulls effects from the developer’s acclaimed SketchCassette, Digitalis, and ShapeShifter plugins and packs them into a colorful lo-fi playground. There’s a Corruption module for Digitalis-style digital artifacts, a Tape effect for warm and wobbly tones from SketchCassette, and a gluey and punchy compressor from ShapeShifter. In addition, Lofi Oddity takes you to uncharted spaces with the ?????? module – could this be hinting at an upcoming plugin? For a quirky and fun lo-fi toolbox, look no further than Lofi Oddity.

Psycho Circuitry Big Bad Tube: Crunchy triode distortion
Psycho Circuitry’s new tube drive plugin Big Bad Tube comes in three versions: two paid ones (Big Bad Tube+ and EX) and a free version! While the freebie doesn’t offer some of the bells and whistles like selectable tube types or dual-channel operation, it’s still a versatile tube drive with a great-sounding triode emulation. Besides the large drive knob and input / output controls, Big Bad Tube Free offers a Tone knob for quick frequency adjustments. There’s also a Mix knob to dial in just the right amount of crunch. And if you like it, you can always upgrade to one of the other versions, which are even more versatile.
Big Bad Tube is available for macOS and Windows in VST3 and AU formats.
Dixon Beats DB1: Casio SK-1, anyone?
Dixon Beats pays homage to everyone’s favorite toy sampler from the 80s, the legendary Casio SK-1. For the new DB1 plugin, they’ve meticulously sampled all presets from the original keyboard, and added some new ones for even more variety. The GUI mirrors the colorful buttons and sliders of the classic. More importantly, though, you get a full set of synth controls like an envelope, various filter types, reverb, saturation, and stereo width for much deeper sound shaping than the SK-1 was ever capable of. While it’s a bit disappointing that you can’t actually record your own samples, DB1 is still a must-have if lo-fi hip hop and synth pop is your thing.
