Dtronics DT-303: Acid Distortion in Three Flavours

The TB-303 on its own is never quite enough, and so Dtronics are going to bombard it with three types of novel distortion from the fabulous-looking DT-303 Acid Sound distortion box.

This is a stunning bit of design from Dtronics. Dtronics is known for its hardware programmer extensions to synths, MIDI tools and replacement power supplies. The DT-303, I believe, is its first foray into audio effects.
The DT-303 is obviously designed to complement the classic Roland TB-303 or the DinSync RE-303 Bass Line synthesizers. It’s very common to run a 303 synth through a Boss distortion or overdrive pedal to give it the bite that helps it penetrate mixes and our drug-addled brains. It’s the sort of thing both Behringer and Donner have included in their bass synth emulations. But the DT-303 is a little bit different.

The DT-303 includes three distinct distortion types known as Classic, Turbo and Overdrive. You will find all sorts of blends of that Boss sound but with plenty of spectral variations from mild to extreme. The distortion knob allows you to pile on the pressure, while the filter lets you squash those high frequencies to emphasise that fat bottom end. A useful Bypass button lets you blast in the acid toxicity whenever you feel like it. The website seems to suggest that “Bypass” is a distortion type but I’m assuming that’s a typo or a bit of poetic license.
Kickstart
Very simply it has an input and output on the back plus a connection for power. It’s rugged, made of metal and definitely looks the part next to a Roland original or DinSync replica. It sounds pretty awesome and will definitely add that spice and impact to your acid bass lines.
The DT-303 is planned as a Kickstarter project that begins on the 24th of January.

Sounds brilliant !! – but I reckon they should make another similar video with the Behringer TD-3. Much wider ownership demographic. Show people what their TD-3’s can sound like, and they’ll be throwing money at this 😉
