Danelectro Fifty Niners: Brightening the look of your sound

Danelectro are a lot like Gretsch. To the untrained eye, all of their models are the same, and they’re both attempting to capture a bygone era of surf and rockabilly music. Moreover, they’re both semi-hollow-bodied guitars. In this case, these fifty niners both look and sound bright.

Visually, these guitars always look great. Here, we’ve got a spruce body with a small F-hole, in addition to a maple frame and centre block. Thanks to the hollow body design and a masonite back, this is a reasonably lightweight guitar. Allowing for a rich, zingy surf tone.

Moving upwards, players benefit from a c-profile neck along with a rosewood fingerboard. Upon which sits 21 frets. You’ll have noticed these Danelectro Fifty Niners come in a fetching 50s revival red colour, in addition to this jade green and gold top. However, each variant comes with what Danelectro call chocolate black back and sides.

Fifties Style Pickups

Sticking with tradition, these Danelectro Fifty Niners come with a pair of 59 Dano 50s Lipstick single coil pickups. Deciding whether you have full twang or not, are silver die-cast potentiometer pots in the form of master volume and tone controls.

Intonation is aided on these Danelectro Fifty Niners by a stylish wraparound bridge, sitting slightly above a 3-way pickup selector switch. Allowing players control over both pickups separately, or the ability to use them together for a warmer sound.

Conclusions

We like that despite the varying top colour choices, they all retail at the same price. Additionally, if you’re looking for a lightweight gigging guitar, you won’t have to break into your savings account to afford this one.

It looks like the Danelectro Fifty Niners will be shipping in around 3-4 weeks at *Thomann, so be sure to keep an eye out.
