JBL 305P MKII
Although they are probably better known for PA systems and consumer tech products these days, JBL was once an industry-renowned manufacturer of professional studio monitors.
Continuing this legacy in home recording, the JBL 305P MKII is an affordable choice for compact listening spaces and a great first set on monitors for beginners. The rear-ported bi-amplified design uses a 5-inch woofer (41W) and a 1-inch tweeter (41W).
In addition, there are boundary EQ and high-frequency trim switches on the rear panel for making adjustments to optimize the 305P MKII for your room and speaker placement configuration.

AKG P420
For affordable home recording, the AKG P420 condenser microphone provides plenty of value. Its large 1-inch diaphragm gives it a warm overall sound with good clarity and high-frequency detail.
In addition, there is a selection of three polar patterns including cardioid, omnidirectional, and figure-8. This makes the P420 a versatile mic for tracking vocals, woodwind, and brass instruments, as well as guitars, pianos, and percussion.
The P420 can perform well connected directly to your audio interface, so you get recording right out of the box. What’s more, the mic ships in a protective case with a shockmount. Overall, it’s an excellent multipattern condenser for the price in this week’s studio deals.
Golden Age Audio Premier Pre-573
Many professional producers and audio engineers will tell you that everyone needs a 1073 mic preamp, but it wasn’t always an affordable piece of gear. However, the Golden Age Audio Premier Pre-573 has set about changing this.
This 500-series mic pre and DI module is built with Carnhill transformers, bringing a vintage sound to your vocal and guitar recordings. Furthermore, the Premier Pre-573 has an impedance switch to shift between 1200 and 300 ohms.
This makes it possible to use it with a wide variety of dynamic, condenser, and ribbon microphones. When recording, you can remove low-end rumble with the high-pass filter (45/180 Hz) and the AIR EQ function adds a glistening high-frequency sheen.

Drawmer 1974
When you want to shape and colour your mixes or channel groups, the Drawmer 1974 is a great tool for the job. If you sum your channels down to stereo groups, the high-cut and low-cut filters are great for isolating the bandwidth of a signal and creating mix pockets.
What’s more, the 1974 is a 4-band parametric EQ with two midrange bands that have variable Q-factor. When combined with the high and low shelving filters, you have a good selection of tools to correct or sweeten any sound in your mix.
Although it’s certainly more of an investment than the average EQ plug-in, the 1974 will add depth and character in ways that software simply can’t, and it only takes up 1U of rack space.

One response to “Studio Deals from Universal Audio, AKG, Drawmer, and JBL”
Just a point, the Waves Drawmer plugin is really good for getting the ‘stereo pocket’ thing. We’ve used for it years. Probably not as good as the hardware, but as a stereo expander and mix pocket maker it works well on appropriate recordings, best on stuff panned mid point between 0 and fully left/right. We can’t remember a review for this plugin, and came across it in a bundle, but if you like your spacey stereo soundstaging, it works well on many recordings, though not all. We’d have the hardware if we had the money. 😎
