G&L has just announced a brand new 5-string bass called the Kiloton, which they evidently think has enough explosive power to punch through any mix. It does looks like a pretty serious piece of kit, though, with that G&L MFD humbucker…

MFD humbucker

The Kiloton uses a single Magnetic Field Design humbucking pickup, with a single Master Volume, a passive tone and a 3-way mini-switch for selecting split, series and parallel settings for the MFD. On the official demos, the low B on this new 5-string sounds great. This bass is available with either a Swamp Ash or Alder body, while the maple Modern-C neck profile features a 1 7/8” nut-width. The Kiloton can also be ordered with either a maple or a rosewood fretboard. The frets are medium jumbo and so should, I would imagine, make for a smooth playing experience.

The Kiloton comes with a set of Custom G&L “Ultra-Lite” aluminium tapered string posts, which should hold tuning perfectly without weighing down the headstock. The six-bolt neck looks solid and the whole vibe is one of a really nice modern bass guitar, but with some classic ‘Fender’ like lines, akin to a Precision on steroids. That G&L Saddle-Lock bridge also looks bomb proof!

This American-made bass guitar will certainly be one to check out if you are in the market for a high quality, modern instrument, especially if you enjoy a simple interface and don’t require any active electronics to achieve your bass tones.
