NAMM 2016: Yamaha unveils new MONTAGE flagship synthesizer featuring FM-X and AWM2 sound engine
The new MONTAGE synthesizer is posed to fuse FM and AWM synthesis in a new way, thus the name. Yamaha promises no less than “a new dimension of FM-sound design” and gave MONTAGE 128 voice polyphony and ten times the waveform capacity of their MOTIF XF.
Intuitive sound control is another key feature: Motion Control via Super Knob, Motion SEQ and Envelope Follower shall enable the creation of highly dynamic sounds. Super knob is capable of controling one or multiple paramaters simultaneously for dramatic sound manipulation using only one knob. The new Motion Sequences allow for tempo-synched performance manipulation of any parameter. The Envelope Follower uses any part’s output signal or the synthesizer’s audio input as modulation source for dynamic sound manipulation.
Of course there’s a ton of other items on the feature list, including class-compliant USB for up to 16-channel 24 Bit audio and MIDI via a single USB-cable. Three models will become available, a 61- and 76-key version with FSX synthesizer-action and an 88-key top model featuring weighted keys.
I have to admit – 8 operator FM-synthesis makes me curious, and fusing FM with AWM-samples could also have some potential. I guess, one of the key deciding factors for this product will be its ease of use …and the price.
MONTAGE 6, 7 and 8 are scheduled for shipping in May 2016.
