Steinberg X-Stream

X-Stream is a free software synth that runs inside Steinberg HALion 7.1 or the free HALion Sonic 7.1. Steinberg even offers a 50% off deal on HALion 7 right now (see below). It comes with a library of presets, but you can also load your own samples via drag&drop. Then, X-Stream unleashes an array of spectral algorithms and other synthesis tools to turn your sample into something completely new.

More Information

According to Steinberg, X-Stream excels at creating cinematic soundscapes. It’s also great for sound effects, ambient music, game soundtracks, and electronic music.

The spectral engine at the top of the plugin is the main event. It looks a bit like a mini version of SpectraLayers, and I think it’s safe to assume that the synth is based on technology from Steinberg’s flagship spectral editor. You can use parameters such as Blur Time and Depth, Purity, Inharm, and Position to determine how the spectral components of your sample become the basis of a new sound.

Furthermore, X-Stream offers familiar synthesis parameters such as a multimode filter, amp, various LFOs, and a stepped modulation source for further sound shaping. There are also built-in EQ, delay, and reverb effects. According to Steinberg, an international team of sound designers provided more than 100 presets for you to explore.

If you’re into cinematic sound design, this freebie from Steinberg is clearly a must-have. It also looks like a great way to turn any sample into a world of new ideas.
