Waves cross-bred an EQ and compressor plug-in and called it the F6
Waves Audio has introduced a new EQ plug-in, the F6 Floating-Band Dynamic EQ. This isn’t another vintage EQ sim like so many flooding the market on a weekly basis. Rather, Waves’ EQ is unabashedly digital and designed as a “surgical” tool for critical frequency correction. It also has an integrated compressor, hence the ‘dynamic’ part.
There are plenty of decent digital graphic EQs that ship with DAWs or have gained a foothold among the pro studio crowd, such as FabFilter‘s Pro-Q. What makes Waves’ special? Truthfully, there’s nothing you can’t do with another EQ plug-in, a compressor, and setting up some clever automation. But Waves are betting you don’t have time for all that and is pitching this plug-in to offer all that in a single package, with a pleasant interface and convenient functionality.
The F6 has 6 fully adjustable parametric filter bands with separate EQ (freq, q, gain, range) and compression/expansion controls per band, in addition to mid-side processing. With the integrated compression options, you have the luxury of applying a particular EQ curve to specific moments of the song or track, according to their dynamics. The EQ can engage when the signal crosses a certain threshold, then automatically back off when the signal levels out.
Being an ‘advanced’ type of EQ, the F6 is unsurprisingly flexible, with freely adjustable filters, floating bands that can overlap, variable EQ shapes, mid-side processing (great for sorting out the bass when mastering dance tracks for mono speakers in clubs, for example), and those threshold-sensitive EQ settings related to the compressor. Additionally, Waves is touting zero operational latency and low CPU consumption. Paired with the modern graphical interface, this EQ looks like a capable tool for growing and advanced producers.
