Apple could unveil the fourth generation of its popular in-ear headphones, the AirPods 4, as early as this autumn, and the rumour mill is buzzing. Speculation is growing that Apple could launch not just one new model, but two different versions of the headphones.

These are said to be an entry-level model and a more advanced ‘mid-range’ version. These new models would replace the currently available AirPods 2 and 3, which have been on the market since 2019 and 2021 respectively.

AirPods 4: What does the new generation actually do?

One of the highlights of the more expensive AirPods 4 could be the integrated Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), which is currently only available on the AirPods Pro. This means that users who do not opt for the Pro version will be able to enjoy this useful feature.

Both models will also feature a USB-C charging port, which will finally replace the Lightning port. However, it is rumoured that the cheaper version will not have a wireless charging option in the case, while the ‘high-end’ version will. That would be a bit weird and unfashionable, wouldn’t it?

It is also interesting to note that it is still unclear whether Apple will keep the familiar design without the silicone earbuds, or perhaps introduce a new shape. The move to USB-C could indicate that Apple is moving its entire product range, including the AirPods 4, to the new standard.

AirPods 4 and Max with USB-C and more: Is Apple planning big changes?

In addition to the AirPods 4, there is also speculation about a possible update to the AirPods Max headphones. These rather expensive headphones have been on the market for four years, and while no major redesign is expected, Apple could be planning an update in the form of a USB-C port and possibly new colour options. Whether this update will be released alongside the updated AirPods 4 remains to be seen. And without any new features? Wow.

Bloomberg leak specialist Mark Gurman expects Apple to unveil the new products at an event in September, with 10 September the likely date – based on Apple’s previous product launch patterns. And as part of a major product update, along with the iPhone 16 and Apple Watch Series 10. Until then, many details will remain speculation, and the tech world is eager to see what surprises Apple has up its sleeve.

The exciting wait for Apple’s annual keynote begins

This information is exciting because it shows that Apple is constantly working on updating its products and surprising the market with new features and design changes. In particular, the possibility that the non-Pro models of the AirPods could also be equipped with active noise cancellation in the future could be a major incentive for many users to switch to the new AirPods 4. The move to USB-C could also be a logical continuation of Apple’s strategy to move its entire product range to this standard.

The coming weeks will certainly bring more clarity and it remains to be seen what Apple will actually present in the autumn. It remains to be seen whether it will be just the AirPods 4 or whether the AirPods Max will also receive an update. What is certain, however, is that Apple will once again make a statement by presenting its latest innovations.
