The Roland SP-404 MKII is something like a phenomenon. The original version keeps getting better and better with updates. There has also been a very cool limited edition version in the form of the SP-404 MKII Stones Throw Limited Edition. Now Roland has teamed up with another cult record label, Detroit’s KDJ Records, for a take limited to just 600 units: the Roland SP-404 MKII KDJ Records Limited Edition.
Very Moody Yeah Yeah
If I have to tell you what KDJ Records is then the SP-404 MKII KDJ Records Limited Edition probably isn’t for you, but that is my job so here goes.
Launched in 1994, the Detroit-based house and techno-focused KDJ Records is home to the legendary Moodymann. In fact, it’s also run by the same artist, known to his close friends and family as Kenny Dixon Jr.
Get Loaded
The Roland SP-404 MKII KDJ Records Limited Edition unit celebrates the legacy of this incredible label. The first thing you’ll notice is the custom aluminum faceplate with the word “Detroit” displayed proudly on it. It’s also got the famous sunglasses image of Moodymann too – which appears on the LCD screen too. Very cool.
KDJ Records superfans will love that the Roland SP-404 MKII KDJ Records Limited Edition comes pre-loaded with 10 banks of exclusive samples and patterns, including six new tracks and four modern KDJ classics.
As with the Stones Throw edition, this one is bundled with a record and mixtape. The record, a seven-inch single, features two new edits of “I Think of Saturday” and “Hold It Down.” The 60-minute tape was put together by Moodymann himself.
