The new Warm Audio WA76 Series offers updated single and dual-channel recreations of the famous 1176 revision A and D limiting amplifiers.
Released over a decade ago, the original WA76 has become one of the most popular modern clones of the 1176 compressor. Now, Warm Audio returns with updated versions of the classic “Blue Stripe” (Rev. A) and “Blackface” (Rev. D) in single and dual-channel versions.
Warm Audio WA76-A and WA76-A2
If you want a more vintage sound, the WA76-A recreates the character of the original Blue Stripe Revision A version of the UREI 1176.
Its original topology used an FET in both the preamp and line amp and did not yet have the low-noise (LN) circuitry that featured from revisions C onwards.
As far as sonic characteristics go, this gave the Rev A a higher noise floor with greater harmonic distortion imparted onto the sound.
This makes the Blue Stripe a great choice for crunchy guitars and gritty drum sounds. Meanwhile, Warm Audio has added a few tweaks for added flexibility.
Warm Audio WA76-D and WA76-D2
Based on the cleaner Revision D, the WA76-D brings its characteristics into the modern recording era at an accessible price.
With its more linear gain-reduction FET, the original Rev D offered more precise operation while the Q-bias pot reduced distortion. Having a cleaner, brighter sound than the Rev A made the Rev D a preferred choice for vocal tracking.
In addition, Warm Audio has expanded its flexibility, making the 1176 as relevant as ever in modern music production workflows. Overall, the new WA76 Series offers the choice of a vintage (Rev A) or more modern (Rev D) 1176 sound, in a single or a dual-channel version. The choice is yours!
