Mooer MSC20 Pro Upgrades the Budget-Strat with Coil-Split
What Mooer started with the MSC10 Pro as an affordable entry-level strat, the manufacturer is now developing further. The four models in the Mooer MSC20 Pro series offer some exciting upgrades in comparison. And yet they are still damn affordable.
Mooer MSC20 Pro: Bursting Colors
With the MSC10 Pro models, the manufacturer took a different approach than with its technologically focused series M800 and S800. The company released a pretty simple Strat model that offered a lot of guitar for very little money. With the Mooer MSC20 Pro, their back-to-basics idea has been further developed.
The most obvious difference is the four colors, Prune Purple, Amber Brown, Ocean Blue and Black Burst. Where the MSC10 Pro mainly included single-colored ST models, Mooer’s new models feature a burst look that makes these guitars look a whole lot fancier. This also has to do with the “selected” ash top.
As is usually the case in the lower price segment, the body is poplar, as with the MSC10 Pro. The neck (standard “C” profile) is made of roasted maple like its predecessor. However, it now comes with a jatoba fretboard (12″ radius), which, according to Mooer, offers a more organic and “real” playing feel than the tech maple of the MSC10 Pro.
HSS and Coil-Splitting
The fretboard has 22 nickel silver frets with standard dot inlays. The MSC10 Pro and MSC 20 Pro also have the same chrome hardware. Mooer opted for a vintage MVT -1 tremolo bridge and closed MTN-1 tuners again. The pickup setup is also the same.
Three pickups in HSS configuration are included: an MSC-1N single-coil at the neck, an MSC-1M single-coil in the middle and an MHB-1B humbucker in the bridge position. The usual five-way switch allows different combinations of said pickups, a volume and a tone control do the rest.
But the big difference here is the second switch, which turns the humbucker into a third single-coil via coil splitting. This potentially gets you even more authentic Strat sounds. In combination with these new colors, and the Jatoba fretboard, this is a pretty nice second guitar, if you’re looking to upgrade. Or, if your budget is a little higher, this might even be the perfect first ST model.
How much does a Mooer MSC20 Pro cost?
This new series is slightly more expensive than the MSC10 Pro but still in the beginner’s range. Each of the Mooer MSC20 Pros costs 289 euros at Thomann*. However, the guitars will not be delivered for nine to twelve weeks.
