Teenage Engineering may be about to launch a new product called the OP-XY. A recent application to the FCC has piqued the interest of fans, and eagle-eyed observers on Reddit have spotted clues pointing to a new device. Apparently, the OP-XY will soon receive the necessary certification for the US market, and Teenage Engineering has even requested a confidentiality period until April 2025. This suggests that the company is expecting special innovations that will remain under wraps for the time being. Is this the leak for the mysterious Swedish announcement?
Teenage Engineering OP-XY: New Bluetooth Synthesiser on the Horizon?
Update: Another teaser message has been sent from TE. This one contains the date 11/14/2024, so we will soon know more about what is behind it! There is at least some wild speculation about an OP-XY field in the comments section of this Instagram post.
Social media activity also hints at the forthcoming product. A mysterious image recently appeared on Teenage Engineering’s Instagram and website, a simple black and white gradient with the message “etwas kommt bald” – which is German for “Something is coming soon”. CEO Jesper Kouthoofd also posted the same image with the hashtag #XY, further fuelling the rumour mill. This suggests that the OP-XY could be related to the existing product line, particularly the OP-Z.
It is also worth mentioning that Kouthoofd’s posts included pictures of a ‘grip car 2’, which could also be about to be launched. The comment ‘#XY #bluetooth approved #launch soon #gripcar2 #autonomous’ suggests that it could be an autonomous device, and that the OP-XY could get a Bluetooth function. These clues suggest that Teenage Engineering is preparing to expand its portfolio, once again piquing the curiosity of its loyal community.
Teenage Engineering Prepares to Launch New Hardware
The predecessors of the alleged OP-XY, notably the OP-Z, were known for their compact size and versatile features, including a synthesiser and sequencer. Bluetooth connectivity, as the OP-XY may have, would give users even more flexibility and further simplify mobile music production and control. Such a feature could make the OP-XY perfect for use in combination with other Teenage Engineering devices. One Reddit user even speculates about an X/Y keyboard a la TENORI-ON. We are excited!
Teenage Engineering seems to be trying to keep the excitement high with targeted hints and secrecy. The request for keeping it secret until April 2025 definitely suggests that the company has high expectations for the OP-XY and that something really interesting might be coming – typical TE, I’d say. An official announcement in the next few days could shed some light on the situation and reveal the ideas behind the OP-XY and the possible Grip Car 2.

If its a toy school bus, im done with TE.
Whatever this ends up being, I’m 100% confident it will be several orders of magnitude more idiotic and overpriced than anything I can imagine.
