Dope Matrix Mod Squad: 20 modules of virtual modular for Ableton Live
Sonic Faction produce some really interesting Max For Live devices for Ableton Live. Tricky Traps, that they released last year, was a particular favourite of mine. Their latest creation is a new version of Dope Matrix, a virtual modular device, that was originally released as a Live Pack in 2014. Dope Matrix Mod Squad builds on and revolutionises the original concept into a very colourful and comprehensive virtual modular environment.
Dope Matrix Mod Squad
Mod Squad brings together 20 modular devices that include oscillators, effects, modulators and sequencers. It intends to capture the power and flexibility of Eurorack modular synthesis. You can rack up devices in any order or combination to create unique collections of sonic generators. There are 6 analogue and wavetable oscillators, filters, envelopes, FM and LFOs. Completely new in this version are the Lithium feedback synth and the Freak Mod FM randomizer.
In the effects section there are bucket delays, resonating reverbs, distortions and glitch machines. You can chain them together however you feel. On the modulation side along with regular LFO’s you can draw in modulation curves, or use the step modulator for rhythmic manipulations.
The sequencer also features a control matrix for easy connection and control from hardware controllers like the Launchpad or Push. You can use it to trigger patterns created in the sequencer or start generating patterns with the randomizer.
It looks really exciting to play with. The design and colour appeals to me much more than the original Dope Matrix. They are leaning quite heavily on the hardware integration which looks awesome in the promo video (below). But I wonder if it feels more cumbersome if you’ve just got a mouse or trackpad.
Dope Matrix: Mod Squad is available now for $69 and requires Ableton Live 9.7.2 Suite and Max For Live 7.3.4 to run. More information on the Sonic Faction website.
