Behringer SWORDS: Sharp as Blades?
Dual analog multi-mode filter with flexible routing and distortion
Behringer SWORDS is yet another copy of a Mutable Instruments design. Like MI Blades, SWORDS is a dual analog multi-mode filter with flexible routing and built-in distortion. SWORDS is now ready for pre-order.
Behringer SWORDS is a clone of Mutable Instruments Blades
Just a week after WAVES, Behringer presents the next copy of a Mutable Instruments module. As a clone of Blades, SWORDS includes two analog state-variable filters with lots of CV control, flexible routing, and a built-in overdrive and distortion stage.
The circuitry of the 18 HP Eurorack module is based on the 2164 chip – a quad VCA that has been copied by Behringer’s in-house chip foundry Coolaudio. The two 12 dB filters can morph continuously from lowpass to bandpass to highpass, which can also be CV-controlled. The filter routing is also adjustable manually or via CV. You can use SWORDS as two independent filters, combine the filters in parallel or serial configurations, or anything in between.
The filters self-oscillate at high resonance settings and offer V/Oct inputs for pitch control. Each filter also has CV inputs for frequency modulation and resonance. Like Blades, SWORDS allows you to set the second filter relatively to filter 1, with an adjustable offset.
Thanks to built-in drive stages in both channels, which are also CV-controllable, SWORDS can deliver some rather aggressive sounds. The drive ranges from subtle soft-clipping to two-stage wavefolding.
