Sounds and Presets: A Huge Sackful of Fantastic KORG Presets
Plus the legendary Schidt Synthesizer in Kontakt form and patches for Cherry Audio's Atomika
KORG’s microKORG2 takes the legendary microKORG to new heights, much like the opsix did for FM synthesis. Check out these new KORG presets and more in this week’s Sound and Presets.
Sounds and Presets
KORG Presets Part 1: Blinksonic for microKORG2
We’ve been properly spoiled with KORG presets this week! First up, we’ve got a couple of volumes of patches for the new microKORG2. The original microKORG was hugely successful. It is often cited as the best-selling synthesizer of all time, although I don’t have the paperwork to back that up!
But it is safe to say that the OG microKORG was a rip-roaring success, finding its way into many setups both amateur and professional. I recently worked on a project with a microKORG where I had to replicate as closely as possible a bunch of synth patches created on far bigger and more capable synths and I was blown away by how close I was able to get to many of them.
With the microKORG2, KORG is clearly looking to extend the legacy of the original well into the 21st century. With an all-new virtual analogue engine, increased polyphony and a lovely colour screen (much needed!), the microKORG2 is a worthy successor.
And now, via Blinksonic, we have a couple of superb sound libraries to expand its sonic palette. The sounds in both volumes were created by Sylvain Stoppani. Sylvain is the main creator of the microKORG2’s user interface and they really show off the wide range of sounds that the instrument is capable of producing.
Both packs retail for just $10, but right now, they’re both available for just $5! Volume 1 and Volume 2 of the Blinksonic presets for the microKORG2 are available now from the KORG shop.
KORG Presets Part 2: Retro Game Resonance for opsix
You want MORE KORG presets? Very well, then. More KORG presets you shall have! This time we’ve got a brand new pack for the KORG opsix. When KORG released the opsix, they introduced a whole new audience to the beauty of FM synthesis with a user interface that didn’t require a maths degree to use!
FM synthesis is most commonly associated with those sounds of the 80s. The punchy bass, those lush electric pianos, plucked sounds and bells… all classic FM fodder. But FM synthesis was also used heavily in video games with consoles like the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis using Yamaha FM chips.
And it is these sounds that the Retro Game Resonance pack for the opsix is paying homage to. Yuzo Koshiro and DJ SHIN have collaborated to deliver a collection of 32 patches that draw straight from the video game era of the late 80s/early 90s.
These patches will work on any version of the opsix hardware that is running v2.0 OS or higher. They will also work on opsix native v1.2.1 or later. Retro Game Resonance for KORG opsix and opsix Native is available from the KORG shop right now with 50% off at just $5!
RSI 1 for Kontakt. A Schmidt Synth Sample Library by 10 Phantom Rooms
Often referred to as one of the greatest analogue synthesizers ever built, the Schmidt 8 Voice Analogue Polyphonic Synthesizer is an exquisite example of sonic and industrial design. An uncompromising behemoth that is both revered and rare.
I only know one person who owns one, and he often tells me it’s his Desert Island synth. I had a play with one at Superbooth earlier this year and was bamboozled by the potential and possibilities that it offered me. Sadly, I have neither the room nor the budget to be able to explore it further.
And that’s where our next sample library comes in! RSI 1 has been created using the Schmidt as its sound source. RSI stands for Rare Synth Instruments and as the number 1 suggests, it is the first in a series of Kontakt libraries designed to put rare beasts within your reach.
RSI 1 has a hugely stylised interface for rapid control of sounds within the library, which is jam-packed with sounds from the Schmidt, as well as additional resynthesis and granular samples to go beyond the power of the Schmidt. There’s also a built-in sequencer.
My only question is… if this is No.1 in an ongoing series, what rare beast is next in line for the RSI treatment? What would you like to see? Let us know in the comments below. You can purchase RSI 1 for Kontakt directly from the Native Instruments site now for £89.
Atomika Sound Bank 79 by PolyData
We’ve featured Polydata’s Sound Bank 79 series of patches and presets here before and here we are again, this time with their bank of sounds for Cherry Audio’s excellent Atomika synth. If you weren’t aware, Atomika is Cherry Audio’s recreation of the legendary Polivoks synthesizer that originated in Communist Russia.
This new library for that synth contains 35 patches that seek to eek out as much of that Soviet analogue nastiness as possible and they’ve done an excellent job. Atomika has such a unique character, just like its inspiration, and Polydata have made the most of it.
Check this, and all the other Sound bank 79 presets by Polydata, at their website now. Atomika Sound Bank 79 is available to purchase from PolyData’s webstore.
