Solar Guitars is heating things up nicely with an upgraded version of its popular Pyro Rojo guitar. It has been overhauled and relaunched in time for the new year. It follows the recent announcement of the AB6BCM European Master Series and gives shredders even more choices from Ola Englund’s guitar brand.

This latest Pyro Rojo iteration is finished and assembled at the company’s Spanish facility and boasts a range of enhancements that elevate its performance and aesthetics. The model launched earlier this year and has now been upgraded and enhanced.

Shou Sugi Ban

The distinctive look of the AB1.6FR Pyro Rojo is further amplified through the Shou Sugi Ban technique, an ancient Japanese art form where wood is torched to enhance its strength and bring out unique grain patterns of the swamp ash body.

Following the torching, the body and headstock are meticulously sanded and tinted a vibrant fire red before receiving multiple coats of poly sealer. The fretboard has 24 stainless steel jumbo frets and a set of Luminlay glow-in-the-dark side dots.

Upgrades

The Pyro Rojo features a Gotoh 1996 Big Brass Block Trem for enhanced tuning stability and expressive playing. Solar has also used a set of noise-silencing springs in the rear to keep trim noise at a minimum, a neat little upgrade that makes a lot of sense when playing with high gain.

Complementing this upgrade is a new Oil Finish for the three-piece roasted maple neck, resulting in a smoother feel, superior tone, and increased resonance. The neck now undergoes a three-step oil-finishing process for a far more refined touch.

Pickups include the Duncan Solar Dual Rail neck and the new Solar Modern bridge pickup. These are wired using a 5-way switch and Volume/Tone push-pull Series/Parallel knobs.

The upgraded Pyro Rojo is assembled in Spain, featuring premium components such as Solar locking tuners, the aforementioned Gotoh 1996T tremolo, high-output Solar and Duncan Solar pickups, and top-quality electronics.

Luthier Setup

Each guitar undergoes a detailed setup by experienced luthiers, ensuring it’s ready for demanding stage and studio performances.

Each Pyro Rojo includes an MCAS custom-fitted ABS TSA flight-ready case and a Certificate of Authenticity hand-signed by Ola Englund and the luthier who assembled the instrument.

Verdict

The upgrades have been well thought out and add a more professional touch to a well-specified guitar for modern players. It is a nice addition to Solar Guitars before the year is out and worth checking out if you like the Shou Sugi Ban finishing technique.

The Gotoh 1996 Big Brass Block Trem is a great locking trem system and one I think will make a massive difference over time, as they are so well made. It was an excellent upgrade by itself. So, with the other extras, these are a steal.

MSRP – USD 1699
