KORG announce the KORG miniKORG 700Sm, a mini version of the classic “mini” but with all the spec.

The KORG miniKORG 700s holds a very dear place in my heart. It was the first proper synthesizer I actually spent time with. I’d recently changed high school and I immediately visited the music department to check out their drum kit, being the drummer that I am.

My First Synth Experience

When I got there, I was crushed to see a dilapidated old 4-piece kit that seemed to have lived through both World Wars and barely survived! Rummaging through the store cupboard, I happened upon a black case that had the word KORG stamped on it. My heart thumped as I opened it and saw an original 700S!

It was yet another sign that I was destined to use such things! Using a couple of books from the library, I was able to figure some things out and have it make some pretty cool sounds. Sounds that have become ingrained in my brain to this day. The sound of a 700s just does something for me.

The KORG miniKORG 700Sm

KORG reissued the 700S in 2021 as the 700S FS, following it up a while later with the software plugin within their Legacy Collection. And now we have the 700Sm, a smaller but fully featured version of this absolute classic. Coming in at around 86% the size of the original and at just 5.8kg (12.8lbs), it will take up less space and save on muscle strain too!

The KORG miniKORG 700Sm has all the features of its larger brother, including a spring reverb, a pitch bend/modulation joystick, an arpeggiator, USB, MIDI In and CV/Gate jacks too. Like the 700S FS, the Traveler controls have had their protrusions omitted to allow for sound design beyond the 1970s original.

As soon as I saw this i smiled. Warm Leatherette & the original version (it’s on the remastered CD of Reproduction) of Being Boiled have the 700S’ fizzy ‘traveller’ goodness all over them
