Ashdown SO-1200: System Of A Down Levels of Bass!
Disorder, disorder...
The Ashdown SO-1200 has been created in collaboration with System Of A Down bass player, Shavo Odadjian. With a 9-band EQ offering unrivalled precision, let’s see what else makes this thing thump.
Ashdown SO-1200: Pure Power
As the name would suggest, we’re working with 1200 watts of pure, unadulterated bass power. This bass head can deliver a low-end response that’s appropriate for the biggest stadiums or the smallest studios.
Shavo Odadjian, bass player of System Of A Down, has given this head his own personal touches, providing it with a unique sonic identity. Reflective of his outgoing live performances.
Here, we’ve got a 12AX7 tube which powers the Variable Valve Drive. Resulting in crisp and precise tones that can be heard no matter how you dial in the 9-band EQ.
Control
The Ashdown SO-1200 is all about control. Therefore, it features a One-Knob Compressor which gives players studio-like dynamic control. Also, you can add ground-shattering depth with an adjustable octave effect thanks to a Sub-Harmonic Generator. All in-house.
Moreover, it can be used with an FS-4 Footswitch, which allows you to switch between the Valve Drive, Sub Harmonics and the Compression settings. Sadly, this is sold separately.
The frequency response ranges from –3dB at 30KHz and has a high Impedance of 3.9m Ohms, and a low instrument input of 10k Ohms.
Connectivity
In addition to the dual Neutrik Jack/Speakon outputs, the Ashdown SO-1200 has a wealth of additional inputs and outputs. Ideal for those mosh pit-inducing bass runs.
For seamless integration with PA systems, there’s a handy DI output and also a transparent FX loop for your other bass pedals. Extras also include:
- Dual 600W power switching
- Tuner
- Effects Send
Thoughts on the Ashdown SO-1200
Overall, I love that this is a powerful, old school, bass head made by a bassist, for bassists. The visuals are pretty nice, and it weighs a reassuring 18.6 kg.
