elysia xmax: Max Out Your Master Bus
Intelligent processing for your master bus.
The elysia xmax is a multiband master bus processor with soft clipping, and mid-side processing designed to glue your mixes together.
German analogue innovator elysia is on a neverending quest to create high-quality signal processing and management tools for recording and live sound environments. The inspiration can come from vintage or modern designs, so there are no rules to govern what the manufacturer will do next.

As with many of elysia’s processors, the xmax is available in 19-inch rackmount format, desktop “qube”, and 500-series module. With its Class-A circuitry, xmax is designed to get under the hood of your mixes while preserving the overall integrity and signal quality.
The multiband compressor section is divided into separate low (which is also mid-encoded), mid, and side bands, each with its own set of threshold and output gain controls. With the control section, you can adjust the compressor’s behavior.
While the x-freq control sets the crossover point (40 – 470 Hz) between the low and mid bands, the time control lets you adjust the release time for all three compressor circuits. Next, with the VariLink control, you can set the compressors to work independently from one another, to link completely, or anywhere in between.
To add more bite to the compression, the punch button steps the ratio up from gentle to high ratio settings. In addition, the lowmo button introduces a high-pass filter to the side band for removing unwanted low end.
Before the signal is decoded back to stereo, the circuit meets with a high shelving filter that imparts what elysia calls “rich analogue high-end” onto the mix, which is controlled with the tone knob. Finally, there is the soft clipper from elysia’s renowned alpha compressor to drive your mix harder.
As we’ve come to expect from elysia, the xmax is an intuitively designed processor, and most importantly, it sounds good, especially the magic that the tone control brings to the high-frequency range. Also, there is gain reduction level metering for all three compressor bands, and meters for the soft clipper as well as the mid and side circuits for a comprehensive overview.
