Looper Pedals: 5 Cheaper Alternatives
So, after what has been the longest month of the year, we’ve all felt the financial pinch. As musicians, we feel it the hardest after the Christmas period. No gigs, no parties, no shows. Ouch.
However, this long month may have left you wanting to start something new. Busking, perhaps? Maybe you want to improve your improvisation skills, chord work, arpeggios? They’re all skills that can be refined with looper pedals.
Sure we have AI, YouTube tutorials, and backing tracks, but a looper pedal allows you to give yourself a bespoke background of what you want to hear. There are plenty on the market, but I’ve hand picked some sensible examples that focus on value and usability.
Harley Benton Mini Looper
Our first instalment comes in this petit package from *Harley Benton. The Mini Looper is a great starting point for learning how to use looper pedals.

This compact phase looper offers up to 10 minutes of looping time! This will give you the freedom to jam around whatever you’re practising. Housed within a solid metal case, you get a volume control and a chrome footswitch that illuminates the LED.
A small addition to your set up, you can power the Mini Looper via your typical 9V power supply. So, if you’re thinking of learning how to do basic loops without investing too much, this one could be for you.

Flamma FS01 Looper / Drum Machine
Okay, so now we’re moving up in terms of pricing. But, crucially we’re adding more capabilities. This Flamma FS01 is a looper pedal, with an integrated drum machine.
![Flamma FS01 gearnews](https://cdn.gearnews.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Flamma-FS01-Looper--1024x565.jpg)
Here, we’ve got 20 minutes of looping time! The drum machine is a nice addition for practising your timing and rhythm. With 11 grooves to choose from in various time signatures, you’ll be covered.
I like that we’ve got a mix mode that blends the looper function with the drum machine, ideal for gigging on the streets. No more punching your guitar for percussion. The best feature has to be the visible looper recording bar, allowing you to see what’s going on.

Boss RC-1
Whenever I think of looper pedals, this is the guy that first comes to mind. This Boss RC-1 been around since 2014, and it’s one of those pedals that I see on most pedal boards at gigs.
![Boss RC-1 gearnews](https://cdn.gearnews.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Boss-RC-1--1024x565.jpg)
What’s so good about it then? Well, it’s just a bit more sophisticated than other pedals at this price point. We’ve got mono / stereo inputs and outputs which gives you a little bit more freedom. Along with 16 bit processing, your loops will be nice and clear.
Although, if you do make a mistake, there’s a redo / undo function! So you can act like that F# note was a G after all. There’s also an LED display to show the status of your loops.

Standout features showcase just how useable this looper can be. With 300 minutes of recording time, 100 memory locations and adjustable BPM. You can even use the Time Stretch function to adjust the tempo of your loops, without altering the pitch.
Physically, we’ve got twin multifunctional footswitches and controls for looper volume and an encoder. USB-C port for connecting to your DAW and a 44.1 kHz sampling rate. Sure, it’s over the tripple figures price point, but it has a lot to offer.

Zoom MS-90LP+
Concluding our look at looper pedals is another relatively new product. With high quality audio thanks to 32-bit processing, does this deserve to be our most expensive, value, looper?
![Zoom MS-90 LP+ gearnews](https://cdn.gearnews.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Zoom-MS-90LP-1024x565.jpg)
This pedal offers various looper effects, such as reverse playback, so it gives you more to think about than just traditional loops. Moreover, we have a potential of 13 hours recording time and 90 minutes of stereo recording per loop.
The 100 phase memory is pretty cool, as is the LCD display that you’ll find on most new Zoom pedals. At this price point, you’d expect further connectivity, and we do thanks to a USB-C port in addition to MIDI output and inputs.

Which Looper Pedal is Right For You?
We’ve only taken a quick glimpse into the world of looper pedals. Fortunately for us, there are plenty out there that don’t require a huge amount of financial investment.
Personally, I’d go for the Mooer. It’s cheap enough and offers me a lot more than just a bedroom or studio jam. I could use it at smaller gigs that need more layers and or percussion.
However, if you’re just wanting to explore the world of loops, I’d recommend either the Boss RC-1 or the entry level Harley Benton. They won’t break the bank, and do what they say on the tin. Win win.

I own and have used a variety of looper pedals. The Ditto X2 is my go-to – not too bulky, but supremely usable for the guitarist who needs to loop sounds and phrases during live sets.
