Best free plug-ins last week: A modular synth and delays for days
Hello, free plug-in hunters! Last week, talented and generous developers delivered three interesting new pluggos – Seismic (a modular synthesizer), Entropy (a delay), and WOK XDEL2 (suprise, another delay!). Here’s more about each of them, along with screengrabs and download links.
Seismic by Syntonica (modular synth)
Available only for Macs running OS 10.6 and above, Seismic is a fully modular wavetable synthesizer. It’s comprised of eight nodes, each featuring three different wave types that can be intermixed in various ways. In this synth, everything is driven by waveforms, even the LFOs and envelopes. Its modular nature comes through when combining the different notes, stringing together your patch.
Beyond the no-frills interface lie many sound design possibilities. Seismic gets installed manually by dragging it to your VST or Components folder. Thankfully, the complex synthesizer includes an 18-page manual, as well as enough presets and sampled sounds to get you started. Overall, a great freebie for self-confessed muff wigglers!
Entropy by CTR (stereo delay)
Entropy is a two-channel stereo cross-over delay available for Windows and macOS. This means the signal from the left channel is delayed and positioned in the right, then the right channel is delayed and positioned in the left. This makes for interesting stereo time-based effects. Up to 2000 miliseconds of delay can be had with this plug-in, and the effect can be controlled with feedback and Dry/Wet knobs. All parameters can be controlled separately, so go as crazy and disjointed as you want.

WOK XDEL 2 (dual delay)
XDEL 2 by WOK VST is a dual delay for Windows with extras, such as tape-style sound, cross-feedback, HP/LP filters, host-sync, and free adjustment. It’s an older plug-in that just got finished and released for free. Throw it onto your tracks and see what all these knobs can do for you.
