PPG W2.2×4 Eurorack Module – Everything’s Coming Up Blue!
Wavetables everywhere!
The wavetable synthesis and PPG revival continues apace with the new PPG W2.2×4 module from Cornel Hecht and Liquid Sky D-vices.
It seems the synth world is happily rediscovering wavetable synthesis again, especially its early roots in the instruments of Wolfgang Palm and his PPG brand. In recent years, we’ve had the absolutely fantastic Groove Synthesis 3rd Wave which took the PPG Wave look and methods and expanded on them greatly to deliver a synth that not only did the ‘PPG thing’ but went WAY beyond.
The Wave in Eurorack
Waldorf, flag bearers for wavetable since PPG’s original demise, have released a slew of synths featuring advanced wavetable synthesis, most recently bringing back the brilliant Microwave and Blofeld synths in plugin form. And then just the other week, Behringer’s Wave finally started shipping, giving us a hardware recreation of the original Wave 2.2.
And now, our Eurorack brothers and sisters can get in on the action with a new module from Cornel Hecht of Hell Modular fame and Liquid Sky Collective that bears the famous PPG logo, officially licences from Native instruments Group (more on this later).

The PPG W2.2×4
The PPG W2.2×4 is a 3U dual wavetable oscillator that features all of the original wavetables from the PPG Wave 2.2. Each of these oscillators is equipped with a sub-bass generator, overdrive and VCA to ensure you get that classic PPG sound, only this time in your modular rack!
Although I am the last person to get excited about Eurorack, I am sure fans of the format will love to get this sound into their cable-laden tone tweaking cabinets! As I’ve been finding out recently, it is a distinctive and unique sound and I look forward to hearing what people do with this in Eurorack.
Back In Black
There is also a limited run of these modules with a black faceplate, although quite why anyone would want this in anything other than PPG blue is beyond me! This black panelled units are limited to 127 and, I’m sure, will sell out quick.

As an aside, and I may have been very late to the game here, but I was blissfully unaware that the PPG brand had been bought by Plugin Alliance in 2020 and, subsequently, became part of the Native Instruments Group when they acquired Plugin Alliance in 2023. I wonder if this has anything to do with Waldorf allowing their PPG Wave 3.V plugin to languish with a painful 20-year old GUI?
