Aly James Lab VProm 3.0: Drum Machine Plugin Now With EPROM Burner, More
Burn your own EPROMs for hardware drum machines and much more with the LM-1-emulating Aly James Lab VProm 3.0 plugin.
Aly James Lab VProm 3.0
VProm, an LM-1-emulating drum machine plugin from Aly James Lab, first dropped back in 2014. With its attention to detail, such as accurate variable sample rate emulation of classic DACs and its ability to load swappable EPROM samples, it’s been a firm favorite among those in the know. Now there’s a new update that adds even more features.
Aly James Lab VProm 3.0: EPROM Burner
Aly James Lab VProm 3.0, which emulates the Linn Electronics Linn LM-1, Oberheim DMX, and other EPROM-based sample drum machines, can now actually make EPROMs, programmable memory chips that hold samples used by many classic sample-based drum machines.

“VProm now features a built-in EPROM creator,” says Aly James Lab, “allowing you to generate custom EPROM binary files without any external tools (that are) ready for use in VPROM or hardware drum machines.” Yes, hardware drum machines.
You can import any .wav file and sample it as you would with a classic hardware EPROM burner. The resampling process uses an emulation of R2R ADC with adjustable input settings, capturing it at roughly 27kHz. You can also disable the resampling stage if needed. Once sampled, you can preview the file with µLaw 8-bit (12-bit quality) compression applied or save it directly as a µLaw-encoded .bin EPROM file.
Aly James Lab VProm 3.0: Other New Features
Along with the EPROM burner, Aly James Lab VProm 3.0 now includes a custom EPROM manager plus real-time µLaw DAC curve response control that can be used as a transient shaper and distortion unit when pushed hard.

You also get advanced EPROM playback controls to adjust sample start, length, and loop modes; an enhanced mixer with three routing modes; a new 48-PPQN internal clock that syncs to your DAW tempo for a vintage drum machine feel; and real-time clock drift that recreates the imperfect timing of old drum machines.
Aly James Lab VProm 3.0 also features enhanced circuit emulation, including on some DMX voice card features like VCA and filter tracking, plus upgraded voltage-controlled CEM filters with additional controls for trim, decay, pulse time, and envelope response.
Other new features include a new drum voice, new master controls, a new velocity mode, enhanced oversampling, dynamic tuning on some drum sounds, plus a new EPROM Kit format for saving kits separate from general presets.
Aly James Lab VProm 3.0: A Labor of Love
Aly James Lab VProm 3.0 is clearly a labor of love. If you’re serious about sample-based drum machine emulations, this looks to be an amazing upgrade.
It’s also very affordable. Aly James Lab VProm 3.0 is €56 new, or €20 with the upgrade discount applied. (For those who purchased VProm 2.0 from December 2024 onward, the upgrade is €10.)
The plugin is fully compatible with Apple silicon and Windows and is available in VST3 and AU formats. Find out more at the Aly James Lab home page (link below).
