The new Strymon EC-1 is based on a ’60s tape echo with a tube preamp, and offers warm, harmonically rich repeats. It is for fans of retro tape echo effects and is based on a modified EP-2.

The pedal’s development drew heavily from the company’s acclaimed El Capistan pedal, known for its realistic emulation of tape echo, and a meticulously restored and modified vintage Echoplex EP-2.

The heart of the EC-1 lies in its advanced single moving head algorithm, a refined version of the technology that made the El Capistan popular. However, the developers sought to capture the unique qualities of a specific, exceptional Echoplex EP-2.

Beyond its core tape echo emulation, the EC-1 offers a range of modern features. Users can select different tube-modeled preamp voices, utilize artifact-free tap tempo, and take advantage of discrete stereo operation for independent processing of left and right signals.

The pedal also boasts straightforward controls, expression pedal capability, and a high-impedance, ultra-low noise Class A JFET stereo input preamp designed for optimal touch sensitivity.

The EC-1 provides advanced users with MIDI control over tempo, patch saving and recall, and more. A USB jack allows for firmware updates and computer-based control. The EC-1 is designed for studio and stage use and is built with premium components and rugged construction.

Styrmon knows how to capture analog effects in a digital recreation, so I expect this latest creation to be worth checking out if you like those old’ 60s-style delays.
