You may know Output as the company behind the sample subscription instrument, Arcade. Output is back with a new sample subscription service called Co-Producer. The difference is that it’s not an instrument, it’s a sample provider, but it uses AI to help you find the best sample for your track.

Calling it “the fastest way to find samples that fit your music,” Co-Producer is a plugin that sits on your master bus. Hit the analyze button and Co-Producer will listen to your music, analyzing both rhythmic and harmonic content. Next, tell it your song’s key and add a few prompts in the text field for what you’re looking for. It will come back with samples in the correct key and tempo that you can then drag and drop into your DAW. It also works with Output.

Output Co-Producer: Interview With Output

To find out more about Co-Producer, we spoke with CEO and founder Gregg Lehrman ahead of the plugin launch.

Gearnews: What was the impetus to make Co-Producer?

Gregg Lehrman: The biggest complaint from our community was that they were spending too much time endlessly scrolling through samples looking for the right ones to fill out their track. It killed creativity. So we built a tool to help you find samples that actually work with your music, rhythmically and harmonically.

This isn’t about AI writing your music. We’re musicians and none of us want that. This is about having a faster workflow by surfacing samples that sound good in your song.

We also knew speed was important. That meant building it as a plugin so you can stay in your DAW and preview samples back in time, in tempo and in key quickly. And with a built-in LLM (large language model), you can search by describing whatever you hear in your head.

GN: How is this different from what other sample providers offer?

GL: It’s completely different.

  1. It finds samples that work. It’s not just an infinite list you have to scroll through.
  2. It’s much faster because it’s a plugin that lives in your DAW and previews fast, always locked. No need to go to an external app and have to deal with bridges or other clunky ways to connect.
  3. It has an LLM built in so you can describe anything you want. You can also search just with your song and let it surprise you.
  4. It’s unlimited and has no credits, so it’s not transactional.

GN: I love that there are no credits. Was that important to do?

GL: Yes. We have no credits in any of our products because when someone is being creative, they shouldn’t be penalized for wanting to experiment and try things. You don’t want to think about how many credits you have left.

GN: Some of the results I got were surprising but also very useful. It feels like an inspiration machine to me. I can see it being useful for remixes. How do you hope people use it?

GL: I’m biased, but I’ve been using it for a while now and I think it’s the best tool in the industry for filling out a track. Of course, you can use it to start a song as well and it has tons of inspiring ideas just like you said… but to me the magic is finding the glue that brings your music to life.

GN: Is there anything else you’d like to say about Co-Producer?

GL: It’s a first version, so there will of course be things we need to fix and improve. But for the people already using it, it’s pretty much transformed the way they work. So we’re all quite excited about the release and can’t wait to show you what’s to come.

Even more importantly though, we think this is a moment where we can put a stake in the ground and show the world that technology can be made for the benefit of music makers. It’s AI that can help real music makers be creative, not replace them. And as a music maker myself, that’s a headline that would make me smile.

I wonder, is this kind of “LEGO” based music production actually considered music? Is she going to to say that she “wrote” a song or that she “built” a song?
