NAMM 2016: PMC officially launch the new IB1S-AIII monitor
Having previously announced the upcoming release of the IB1S-AIII, PMC are now officially launching and demonstrating the new system at NAMM 2016. Aimed at ‘discerning’ professionals as an ‘activated’ reference monitor, this 3-way speaker is sure to be another high-end product from this renowned British monitor manufacture.
Like many, I’m a huge fan of PMC and anything new that they launch is sure to be a serious product. Although they are seen as one of the more pricey monitoring options, this is for good reason. Since PMC was established in 1990 by Peter Thomas and Adrian Loader with the BB5-A, they have become widely recognised for producing reference monitoring for the audio industry.
This new IB1S-AIII is clearly a new version of the well known IB1S, but importantly now sees the addition of PMC’s own Class-D 400W amplifier. I think this was a necessary move by PMC to continue to compete in this section of the market with recent releases of competing active monitoring solutions. Pairing their amplifier with their own “soft dome HF & MF drivers” is said to provide “ultra-high definition and an extremely wide, natural dispersion”. The low frequencies are delivered by their easily recognisable 10″ carbon fibre & Nomex LF piston driver, and ATL bass-loading technology (Advanced Transmission Line). The frequency response – on paper – is an impressive 25Hz to 25kHz. This is certainly on my list of gear that I want to hear, and hopefully sooner rather than later.
Also announced is the availability of the IB1S-C-AIII, which uses the same design but is arranged in a horizontal format.
The UK Recommended Retail Price is GBP 9599, placing the IB1S-AIII as a jump up from their twotwo range.
