So, you’ve got a Shure wireless hand-held mic system and want to add some sonic options, say, for a performer who might need a different mic sound. sE sends the capsule from its popular V7 dynamic mic into the fray, which you can now buy and plug onto your Shure hand-held transmitter. But there is a caveat…
The V7 MC1 capsule mirrors the sonic characteristics of the V7 mic, which has been around since September 2016 (see our post covering its release here). There’s the custom-built aluminium voice coil, all-metal construction, and integrated capsule suspension. The V7 MC1’s supercardioid pickup pattern designed to reject bass build-ups and stage noise. Good stuff all-around, then.
Wireless? Shure-ly not…
Yes, groan all you like at the bad pun, but this is the first time we’ve heard of a microphone maker offering a capsule for a rival’s wireless system. Presumably, sE want to make a product for the wireless hand-held market but can’t or don’t want to develop their own transmitter/receiver system.
The caveat here is that the MC1 capsule is not compatible with Shure’s cheaper wireless handhelds, the BLX and the GLX-D series. The cheapest Shure system compatible with sE’s capsule is the SLX range, costing from EUR 711 (see Thomann link here). It can also be used on the more upmarket QLXD series, which goes up to EUR 1,690.
If you’ve already invested in one of those systems and want to bring the sE V7 sound across to your Shure set-up, this will do the trick. We haven’t compared the V7 sound to theindustry standard SM58, but most reviews seem to see it as a contender in terms of value for money and overall tonal quality.
Price and availability
sE Electronics is shipping the V7 MC1 capsule worldwide with a price tag of 129 USD / 119 EUR. The microphone has a red internal windscreen but comes with a spare black internal windscreen – if red is too intense for your tastes. The price seems a little high given that all you get is the capsule – the whole V7 mic retails for a lot less…
