Sknote outs Disto-S, the cheapest Empirical Labs Distressor sim around!
With both Empirical Labs and Steven Slate in on the Distressor emulation game, discerning producers have no shortage of options when it comes to getting their hands on one of the industry’s finest compressors. It wasn’t always like this, though. Empirical held onto selling hardware units for as long as it possibly could, before there were no excuses left for not coming up with a software version.
Computers are powerful enough, the market is plenty huge, and interest in a Distressor emulation was already everywhere. With the big makers already having made their move, it’s no surprise to see a smaller-time manufacturer like Sknote Audio introduce its take on the Distressor. At the introductory price of 50 USD, the Disto-S is your cheapest option for snagging a Distressor emulation. Normally, these go for $299 or more, so Sknote is being seriously disruptive!
Sknote claims the Disto-S is a complete emulation of the revered compressor, with all its distinct features covered – multiple compression modes, British mode, knee compression, headroom and saturation controls, a Dry-Mix control, and more. Sknote also added an Auto-Gain option to make output gain controls match the original audio level. That, and there’s preset sharing as well. Good stuff all-around!
Price and availability
The Disto-S is available in 32 & 64-bit VST, AU, and AAX formats for Windows and Mac computers. It’s sold for an introductory price of 50 USD, down from 299 USD regular. Considering Empirical Labs and Steven Slate‘s versions cost either that, or a fair bit more, $50 for a Distressor emulation that probably sounds reasonably convincing is quite a steal!
