EVH 5150III 50W EL34 Head and matching 212ST Cab – with new dual controls
Eddie Van Halen launches a new 50-Watt head and cab
EVH has just announced a new 5150III 50W EL34 head with a matching 212ST cabinet. The pair will get you all the tones of the larger 100-watt version but at a lower cost and lighter weight.
EVH 5150III 50W EL34 Head & Cab
This new 50-Watt rated head is essentially the same as its larger sibling that we talked about back in June 2016 here, but a little lighter in weight and half the output power. But at 50 Watts it will still be insanely loud.
Channel One has a more sparkling and compressed clean tone and is complemented by Channels Two and Three which both have a darker compressed tone with even more saturation available. Channels One and Two each have dual concentric gain/volume controls with shared EQ (low, mid, high), while Channel Three has an independent EQ.
Dual Controls
This dual concentric control layout could, of course, be a little awkward to use if you have ‘fat fingers’, but we shall have to wait and see how owners respond to this implementation.
Van Halen
Channels One and Two each have dual concentric gain/volume controls with a shared EQ (Low, Mid, High). Channel Three has its own independent EQ section. You also get a rear-panel resonance control for controlling the lower frequencies of the amp as well and an effects loop, headphone out, pre-amp out and MIDI in.
The matching 212ST cab is rated for 50 Watts and 16 Ohms. It features solid birch construction, and comes loaded with a pair of Signature Celestion G12H Anniversary Series speakers.
Of course, Van Halen is known for his gain tones, so expect bags of it on tap via this 50-Watt setup. With three channels, it should be pretty versatile as well.
RRP – EVH 5150III 50W EL34 Head USD 1517.23 and EVH 212ST Cab USD 666.65
