Annie Clark a.k.a. St. Vincent has launched her new signature Ernie Ball guitar. The guitar has been seen all over the web as a prototype last year and she was seen playing the pre-production version live on stage a number of times throughout 2015.

The Ernie Ball website describes it as an ‘ergonomic body shape’ design. Well, I have to say it is not my idea of ergonomic. However she is a lot smaller than me and so maybe for someone with a smaller frame it would be comfortable. I saw the prototype last August online and described it at the time as a ‘broken shovel’ during an online discussion over on thefretboard.co.uk, but it has grown on me since.

The guitar is made from a lightweight African Mahogany which is loaded with three DiMarzio mini-humbucking pickups, which are wired to a 5-way switch. The neck is a 25.5” scale length and is finished in the infamous lightweight Ernie Ball gun-oil finished rosewood neck. I’ve owned a few Ernie Ball guitars myself and their neck finish is lovely, and feels so smooth with almost zero friction. It features a compensated nut and Music Man tuners.

This is an interesting looking guitar which kind of reminds me of some of the oddball guitars from Japan that came out in the ‘60s crossed with something from The Jetsons cartoon. It has a look you will either love or hate. I have not played one and am not sure I will get the chance to for a while as they aren’t due out for a few months. I do like the sound of mini-humbuckers and I love Ernie Ball trem systems as all my previous guitars tha had one were super smooth and stayed in tune. So, in quality terms I think this could be a great guitar, just not sure I could live with that aesthetic myself. And yet a part of me thinks it is actually pretty cool…

I’ve linked to a few videos on Youtube for those of you who haven’t checked Annie out as a player, as she deserves a cool guitar and as much as I am divided on this new signature guitar, I must say I like her ethos on the instrument.

Available in either Black or St Vincent Blue.
