Softube have a great reputation for releasing plugins that emulate classic pieces of gear, and I’ve often thought that their dynamics processing is very good. With the badge ‘Drawmer’, this could prove to be another great-sounding plugin. However, with minimal user controls, will the ‘intelligent’ processing make the S73 a smart choice?

This is not a review and I haven’t tried the demo version myself yet. But I’m hesitant to. The problem for me lies with there being a trend in the plugin market for ‘one-knob’ user interfaces. Although not quite ‘one-knob’, the S73 appears to offer little interaction based upon words like ‘Clarity’ and ‘Punch’. That’s great if you’re looking for a quick solution and aren’t comfortable with the technicalities yet, but is this the professional way to achieve the very best results?

Having said that, it’s great to see a mastering-style compressor/limiter from Softube and I’m sure the audio ‘quality’ will be nothing short of excellent. The audio in the video below seems impressive but I reserve judgement until I’ve had the chance to thoroughly test it. Personally, I would have preferred to see another plugin emulation from Softube, and I suspect this is incorporating a lot from the Drawmer 1973 Three Band FET Compressor. If anyone downloads the demo, why not leave a comment below with your findings?

Great news for Focusrite ‘Time and Tone’ Bundle owners, or for anyone who purchases a new qualifying Focusrite interface: the S73 is now included.
