Just look at these lovely little things! The “Bivalvia Synthesis” is a small, toy-like synthesizer designed and built by Love Hulten. He’s also the maker of the amazing Triaccord art/synth we saw last year.
Bivalvia Synthesis
The word Bivalvia refers to a class of mollusc that have distinctive clam-like shells. In fact clams are in this class along with oysters, cockles, muscles and scallops. This presumably refers to the nature of the little hand-made wooden box that so delightfully encaptures the synthesis.

Inside the box you’ll find a synthesis engine based on an open source Axoloti core created by Johannes Taelman. The top half consists of a built-in 15w speaker and either 6 knobs or 6 faders depending on your preference. The bottom half houses the important electronics and a fabulous looking mechanical keyboard laid out like a musical octave, plus a couple of extra buttons at the top for octave up/down and patch shifting.

The Axoloti Patcher software lets you create your own effects and sounds using oscillators (from subtractive to FM), filters, modulation and more. Connect the box up via USB and build up your own patch bank to be stored on the internal SD card.

Hulten makes beautiful devices and often sells them as custom commissions. These are not currently for sale but I imagine if there’s enough interest maybe he could be persuaded to make them more available. You’d have to have one of each though yes? Or perhaps it’s enough of an inspiration to consider building one yourself.
