Eurorack modular synth systems are no longer the preserve of obsessives with loads of cash to throw about – they are increasingly affordable for regular people who want to explore the world of hardware synthesis but without having to convert half their house into a storage space for enormous boxes. Macromachines has announced Omnimod, a piece of hardware that will modulate everything, as the name playfully suggests.

In a hardware system you need something to modulate and create movement just like you do with software synths – the difference being that with hardware you don’t have infinite assignments available out of the box. Omnimod looks like it will go some way towards fixing that however, since it has four channels of CV modulation available: LFOs, step sequencing, envelope generation and envelope following, usable in any combination. That ought to satisfy even the most CV-obsessed synth tweaker.

It’s important that you shouldn’t need a doctorate in electronics to be able to use this stuff, and to that end the unit has visual feedback via an OLED screen and an oscilloscope mode to help you keep up. It also manages to remember settings between power cycles, and has user-definable waves and 64 presets. It’s expected to retail for $385 and initial stocks may be limited. You can read more about it here http://macromachines.net/product/omnimod/

And watch a video about it that might make you feel like you’re on drugs.
