Magnetic Effects are a small boutique pedal company based in London, England and already have a quite a following amongst guitarists. Their new Satellite low gain drive/boost pedal is a very smart-looking hand-made overdrive and has just been added to their range.
All the pedals in the Magnetic Effects range look great, I thnk. I know it’s something that doesn’t really affect the tone or sound of a circuit in any way. But I can appreciate a nicely thought-out graphic on a pedal. So this new drive fits in nicely with the whole aesthetic appeal of the company’s other pedals.
It’s an overdrive/boost pedal and uses an internal voltage doubler to attain 18 Volts, which they state on their website should give more headroom for your signal. It’s a tried and tested way of achieving this desired effect and so I have no reason to doubt it should sound better compared to the standard 9V circuits on other drive pedals.
Layout-wise, I do like the fact that the input, output jacks and DC input are all mounted on the top. A simple thing, just it makes it far easier to fit onto a tight pedal board. I really wish other manufacturers would do this more often, as it makes a lot of sense.
The controls are simple, with Volume, Gain, Low and High knobs on the front panel. It should be easy to dial in some useable tones. I haven’t yet heard any audio demos, so cannot really comment on the sound until I do. There are a lot of overdrive and boost pedals on the market already, in fact you could say the market place is saturated with them. So, I wonder what this new one will bring to the table?
