Sonivox Stratum unites supersaws, FM synthesis, and modern effects
Developer Sonivox has gone all-out 80’s on Stratum, its latest release. Stratum is a software synthesizer which combines the famous supersaw sound inspired by the classic Roland JP-8000 with a four-operator FM section, noise generator and sub-oscillator. Does it get any more retro than this?
This is already a solid base for creating the types of sounds which were popular in the heyday of disco and synth pop, but Sonivox didn’t stop there. They also added two low-pass filters, four LFOs, an 8-step sequencer, a vocal formant filter, a tube distortion model, and an XY pad that lets you tinker with Bit Crusher, Phaser, Wah, and Delay effects.
In addition, there are Chorus, Phaser, Delay, and Reverb effects as well as dedicated arpeggiators for the Supersaw and FM synths. The rich effects section means you can easily add a modern touch to the sounds you produce while keeping the overall vibe unmistakably nostalgic.
Overall, we are genuinely impressed by what this synth has to offer. Combining supersaw with FM is an interesting concept that may convincingly bring analog and digital sounds under one roof. And then there’s the wide palate of built-in effects to add the final touch-ups to your sounds.
