Developer ToneBoosters has released version 4 of its ReelBus tape machine, flanger, and echo simulator. And quite the update, too: ReelBus 4 comes with improved tape simulation algorithms and new creative effects, such as Wear, which simulates tape damage to different degrees. Tape speed can be changed continuously between 3.75 to 30 IPS without zipper noises, ToneBoosters claims.

New to version 4 are also a tape flanging effect with LFO (beat-sync), dual tape echo with delay times (beat-sync), and flanging. Both echo and flanging can be applied exclusively to user-specified frequency ranges, and there’s a new configurable tape start and stop effect emulation. Very detailed, all in all!

ReelBus 4 also features DriveEQ, an equalizer with shelving and peaking filters which lets you set how hard each frequency band gets driven into tape saturation. You can home in onto a particular element of the mix, leaving others untouched or subtly processed.

Other notable features brought by ReelBus 4 are sample rates up to 384kHz, processing up to 16 channels of Ambisonics and Dolby Atmos audio, and infinite internal headroom which is supposed to deal away with clipping and noise issues.

For EUR 30 (down to EUR 20 as an introductory price discount) ReelBus 4 looks like a righteous steal! The plug-in is available for Windows and Mac systems. Compared to other tape machine plug-ins on the market, ReelBus 4 doesn’t have those slick spinning reels and tape heads, but it’s a workhorse which offers detailed, comprehensive tape processing.
