The Rode VideoMic Me-L targets iOS vloggers and musicians
Rode has turned its attention towards Apple iOS device owners with the new VideoMic Me-L. The microphone is of the electret condenser type and it’s designed for vloggers, musicians, and anyone else looking to upgrade the onboard mic. Audio is recorded in 44.1kHz or 48kHz in 24-bit format. The construction is aluminium and the mic weighs just about 28 grams.
Rode’s mic attaches over Lightning and is powered by the iOS device, so no battery or charging is required. It has a cardioid pattern to reduce background noises during recording. It also features a headphone output for playback and monitoring. The unit supports all Apple iOS devices with a Lightning port and version 11 or higher of the operating system.
The VideoMic Me-L ships with a mic clip and windshield which makes it possible to film outdoors and in poor weather. Price and release information has not been made available and the mic is yet to be listed on any retailer website. We’ll try getting in touch with Rode to clear things up and write back when we get the info.
This is, by far, one of the smallest and most portable microphones designed for iOS devices. It’s a little puzzling why it doesn’t record audio all the way up to 96kHz, but we figure that’s something everyone can live with. Paired with the iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch’s front camera, it makes for a convenient vlogging solution, ideal for spontaneous creative outbursts or situations that don’t allow carrying a more elaborate video and audio recording setup.
