Summer NAMM 2018: Way Huge Smalls WM28 Overrated Special Overdrive

Way Huge has just released a new, pedalboard-friendly version of the Overrated Special Overdrive pedal. It’s called the Smalls WM28 and Dunlop/Way Huge say it gives the same tones as its big brother, just in a more compact format.

Designed by Jeorge Tripps with some input from Joe Bonamassa, the Smalls WM28 Overrated Special Overdrive pedal is the latest incarnation of the Overrated Special Overdrive, this time in a smaller closure. Dunlop says the circuitry is a “hot-rodded” version of that found in the older Green Rhino pedal, but with an added Freq control for tweaking the low-mids. The Green Rhino overdrive was a popular pedal, with the regular edition selling out ages ago. It’s nice to see this smaller re-release of a circuit based on that design.

The rest of the controls consist of Volume, Tone, and Drive, so you should be able to dial in the tones easily enough. Ideally, it will send a clean amp into that creamy, crunchy territory we all love, and add some grit.
The Smalls WM28 will be limited to 2000 units worldwide, making it slightly less common than a regular release. With the Joe Bonamassa association, it should sell well. I think the price is reasonable and as an owner of around half a dozen Way Huge pedals, I can attest to their build quality and their overall sound (I’ve yet to play a bad sounding one). The bottom line is that Jeorge Tripps makes some damn fine pedals and it seems his collaboration with Joe Bonamassa has really paid off. If you are in the market for a good quality drive pedal then you should be checking these out.
