Gibson intros 2018 LP Jr. Billie Joe Armstrong Signature
Green Day guitarist receives second LP Jr. with a few subtle tweaks
Gibson has announced a 2018 LP Jr. Billie Joe Armstrong Signature model, the second time that the Green Day guitarist has had a signature version of a Les Paul Junior. It’s not vastly different from the first guitar bearing his name…
2018 LP Jr. Billie Joe Armstrong Signature
This new version comes in three colours, Ebony, Maraschino Red and Sonic Blue. It’s s based on a classic ’50s style single cut Les Paul Junior except that these have a pickguard with a weird straight top edge, unlike a regular LP Junior.
57 Classic
This model has a single zebra 57 Classic bridge humbucker instead of the more traditional P90 pickup. Seems a shame, as P90 pickups can sound amazing in an LP Junior. But if Billie wants a humbucker, then that is what you get in this guitar.
Apart from the aesthetics, the rest of the guitar is pretty standard. It comes with a vintage-style wrap-around bridge and a set of Vintage Deluxe Tuners with white buttons. That’s all in keeping with a traditional LP Junior model.
The body and neck are both made of mahogany, and the fretboard is rosewood with ‘low’ cryogenically-treated frets. The guitar has the same slim profile neck that Billie had on his last model, so it should be easy enough to play. All models have a nitrocellulose finish, so they should take on a nice aged look when you riff out your favourite pop/punk riffs on them.
The guitar comes in a Gibson hard case. I just wonder if this one has faux leopard fur print lining like the previous version?
Overall, I’m not a huge fan of the pickguard shape myself, but you may love it.

Yep, that’s one bum-ugly pickguard.
