Mesa Boogie’s new Fillmore 50: A dual-channel amp with MARK heritage
New dual channel classic rock amp
The brand new Mesa Boogie Fillmore 50 is a dual-channel amp with a classic rock sound, available as a 50-Watt combo or head. And given its simple control layout, it might be a good choice for players with plenty of pedals.
Mesa Boogie Fillmore 50
Offered as a head or 1×12 combo, this 50-Watt amp is named after the two famous Fillmore venues on each coast of the USA. Mesa Boogie is clearly invoking some classic rock associations with the naming of its new model. The Mesa Boogie Fillmore 50 has two identical channels, each with three modes – Clean, Drive and HI.
Each channel has a very simple layout with independent controls for Gain, Treble, Mid, Bass, Presence, Reverb and Master. Essentially, you can dial in either channel how you like and select via the mode whether it is clean, crunchy or high gain.
Simple Design
I’m loving the simplicity of the overall control layout. I own a Mesa Boogie Lonestar Special and while it is simple to use, there are a few annoying aspects, like the reverb control being on the rear panel. This new Fillmore 50 design seems easier to deal with, especially for a Luddite like myself.
Celestion
Mesa Boogie has opted for the UK-made Celestion Custom 90 speakers. If you buy the head version then you can get either a 1×12 or 2×12 matching cabinet to go with it. I like that they use a full-length spring reverb on these models, so they will hopefully get you a lush reverb sound.
Powered by a pair of 6L6 power amp tubes and five 12AX7 preamp valves, the Fillmore 50 is based on the DNA of the original MARK series of amplifiers, providing some very respectable heritage.
RRP – Combo GBP 2175 and Head GBP 1899, matching 2×12 cab GBP 849 and 1×12 GBP 575
