The new Mesa Boogie Fillmore 25 is a slightly more manageable version of its recent Fillmore 50 amp head. Will this new smaller version find its niche in studios?

Mesa Boogie Fillmore 25 Head and Combo

The tone setup controls on this new Fillmore 25 amp head are nice and simple, but there is really nothing missing: Gain control, 3-band EQ + presence, and a master. Those controls are doubled because, like the Fillmore 50, the Fillmore 25 has two identical channels, each switchable between Clean, Drive and Hi (for high-gain). The only difference is the power amp output section. The Fillmore 25 produces 25 instead of 50 Watts and uses two 6V6 in the final stage and five 12AX7 in the preamp stage.

On the back are two controls for the tube-controlled reverb (one per channel) as well as outputs for the speakers, FX loop I/O (without additional controls) and the footswitch input for switching channels.

Rock tones?

I strongly recommend the video. There are some very nice sounds on offer there, and the Fillmore 25’s maker has come up with a good demonstration that covers different guitars and styles.  With some impressive vintage rock tones and providing two channels, I reckon this little amp will be great for both studio and live work. The Fillmore 25 is my perfect wattage for a good all-around amp. I use either a Mesa Boogie Lonestar Special or a Friedman Pink Taco, and both those amps come in at similar wattages.

There isn’t much to dislike with this new Mesa Boogie amp. The price seems a little on the high side, though. However, if you are on the lookout for a good quality US-built amplifier for your guitar rig, then this is one to have on your radar.

Currently, I have only seen the head version for sale via Thomann at nearly two grand, but it can also be ordered as a combo. I will update the prices once they are officially released.

RRP – Head version EUR 2090 / GBP 1,847.71
