AES 2018: Waves Abbey Road TG Mastering Chain brings the utmost in vintage mastering
The Abbey Road Studios TG console is the creme de la creme supreme of vintage analog gear, used on jewelry-grade recordings by the Beatles and Pink Floyd among countless other artists both old and new. We are privileged to have access to the technology which lets us experience this rare, expensive, and very special sound on our modern computers.
Knowing this, esteemed developer Waves is rightfully proud to announce its latest product, the Waves Abbey Road TG Mastering Chain plug-in. Created in collaboration with Abbey Road Studios, this is a modular mastering chain plug-in which recreates the EMI TG12410 Transfer Console’s mastering processors, in use at the legendary facility’s mastering suites since the early ’70s right to this day.
The following modules are emulated, as present in the original hardware:
— TG12411 input module
— TG12412 tone module (EQ)
— TG12413 compressor/limiter module
— TG12414 filter module
— TG12416 V.A.L (spread) module (stereo component only) incorporated into the output module.
With the flexibility allowed by plug-ins, all modules can be interchanged (except input/output modules) and bypassed, allowing for a flexible processing flow and the creation of custom chains. All individual modules can be used on different tracks and group buses while in a mixing session, in addition to the master bus in mastering sessions.
The compressor/limiter module presents two sound characters – Original and Modern – coupled with 48dB/Oct linear-phase sidechain filters. The character can be described as either aggressive and dirty, or modern in nature – thanks to Waves and Abbey Road’s original design based on TG topology. Stereo, mono, Left, Right, and Mid/Side modes are supposed.
Paired with the TG Mastering Chain is the Meter Bridge component, available as a standalone plug-in. It’s supposed to be opened on any channel to give you clear readings of VU, PPM, phase, and peak from all Abbey Road TG Mastering Chain instances in your session.
Price and availability
Signed off by the facility’s mastering engineers, the Waves Abbey Road TG Mastering Chain is available now at an extremely affordable introductory price of USD 39, down from USD 199. It is also part of the Waves Abbey Road Collection Bundle. The plug-ins are available in all major formats for Windows and Mac computers.
