Ashdown Engineering’s EVO range of amps were announced at NAMM earlier this year and are getting a UK launch at the London Bass Guitar Show on 12-13th March at Olympia. This UK-based company has evolved the line and now has both new heads and matching cabs in the lineup for 2016.

There is an RM-800-EVO and an RM-500-EVO head with matching cabs sold separately. But the unit is also available as a combo that comes in different speaker combinations from 2 x 10” through to a single 15” or a 6X10″ cab. For more details, see the EVO bass range page.

Both the RM-800 and RM-500 EVO are small format heads and designed to be easy to use and setup. They have a simple EQ, a compressor with only one control knob and an overdrive for when you need some more growl in you sound that can be activated by a footswitch. On the front panel you have controls for EQ Bass Middle and Treble. You also get 340Hz and 1.6Khz controls, which can be bypassed by leaving them in the centre position. The outputs are Speakon connectors, and the amp can handle output as low as 4 Ohms. There is a line input on the rear and also an FX send and return loop.

The two inputs on the front panel share an input level control, and cater for passive or active pickups. There’s also a “Shape” knob, which is a fixed EQ at +8db at 50Hz and +10db at 10 kHz. There are also switches for the compression and the drive on the front as well, which are controlled by one knob for each function, letting you dial in the level of each setting as required. The Sub dial controls the lowest frequencies in your sound. The last two rotary knobs are labelled Output (for setting your overall level) and Line Mix (for setting the level of the line input relative to your main output).

That infamous Ashdown VU Meter is also on the front panel and has become a bit of a trademark in many ways for these amps.

RRP RM-500-EVO GBP £429 and RM-800-EVO GBP £549.

Both are due out later this month.
