Awww we loved the original CRAFTsynth. It was cute, cheap and retro looking with a gritty sound in a brilliant little kit to build to get you into the idea of DIY synths. Modal Electronics has completely ruined it with CRAFTsynth 2.0. Don’t get me wrong, CRAFTsynth 2.0 looks and sounds amazing but there’s nothing “CRAFT” about it. They should have called it “SKULPTmini” or some such because this bears no resemblance to the original in any shape or form.

So with that winge out the way I can tell you that this little synth has 8 oscillators with 2 selectable waveforms and mixing. Chose from 40 waveforms which are split into 8 banks of 5 morphable sets. The sound sources come from virtual analog, digital and generative synthesis and some from the Model 002. There are all sorts of modifying and processing going on including FM, Phase, sync, Ring, Amplitude along with bit crushing, wavefolding and waveshaping. There’s a unison mode to detune the 8 oscillators.

Regular modulation is available in 3 envelopes and 2 LFOs that can go up to audio rate. And then there’s a modulation matrix with 8 sources. There’s a morphable filter, a sequenced arpeggiator, delay and distortion effects, clock sync, MIDI in and out and it can all run on batteries.

I mean this is no Christmas stocking filler DIY synth, this is something a bit more proper – I just don’t get the name and legacy. Weird decision!

Anyway, this Skulpt looking mono wavetable synth will be hitting Kickstarter very soon.

    So:
They’re bypass some of the two kickstarters campaigns ( one’s called presale ) pledges
to give your craft a housing?

I ask because after some emails with modal
the only explanation for delay after delay
and increase the goal for the founding
was that to find a manufacturer for the
skulpt housing and make the pattern for
the machines who print the plastic parts
    are difficult and expensive…

    Interesting
