The Novation Peak is generally well regarded and one of the more interesting desktop polyphonic synthesizers to emerge from our current hardware craze. So when a new update brings some new features I think it’s worth taking a look.

Novation is good at keeping their products up to date and offering existing users some welcome new features. We’ve seen it with Circuit and Mono Station and recently the Bass Station II. The updates are delivered via their “Components” browser-based widget, should be available on the 19th December and will be free to all users.

We’ll be getting 43 new wavetables added to the oscillator wave menus. They’ve doubled the LFO count to 4 with 2 new freely assignable LFOs in the updated Mod Matrix and the new FX Matrix. The four slot FX Matrix lets you route modulation sources to the FX parameters. You can now use the pitch bend wheel on your keyboard as a modulation source, with separate assignments to bend up and bend down. They’ve added a Hold stage to the envelopes and now let you loop between Attack and Decay. If you want to initialise a new patch you no longer have to start from the default values – you can start afresh with everything as it is and go from there. And finally, they’ve added 16 Tuning Tables for microtuning.

All in all a pretty decent and worthwhile update – particularly getting the effects in on the modulation action. That can bring in a whole other world of movement and evolution.
