‘Drum Set Concert I’ by AKG is now shipping – the best in drum micing?
There are now several different drum micing kits available by the various manufacturers. Until now, however, AKG didn’t offer a set that included the very well known D112 kick drum mic. This was probably due to the release of the MKII D112 which we saw last year, and now they’re ready to offer a complete package.
At the heart of the ‘Drum Set Concert I’ is, of course, the D112, which is an excellent mic. I haven’t used a MKII yet myself but the specs and reports that I’ve heard so far are positive. It’s not like they’ve completely re-engineered the D112, managing to keep the tone that it is so well known for, whilst improving the spec and ergonomics. This set includes the D112 and has 7 mics – more than any other kit available – potentially making it a great buy.
This set features two pencil-style condenser mics (C430) intended for overheads, which is also unusual for most drum mic kits. Often drum mic kits only supply you with close mics that tend to be dynamic microphones, leaving you to purchase or use your own condensers for overheads. AKG claim they have carefully put this selection of mics together to ensure the characteristics of each mic compliment one another. This makes a lot of sense, but I don’t think you could go too wrong by using a more expensive pair of overheads. Mind you, each mic in this set does offer more than one usage as various different instrument mics, so this kit would help boost your mic collection in more than one way.
The rest of the kit is made up of four D40 mics, which are primarily designed for snare and tom micing. However, these D40’s also work well with electric guitars and other high SPL sound sources. The kit comes in an aluminium travel case for those that will take it on the road, and includes several different clips & mounting options.
There are various prices around, but the cheapest I could find for this kit in the UK was 687.30 GBP inc. VAT. This makes it one of the more expensive drum mic collections available, but it’s likely to be one of the best sounding and great value with 7 mics.
